Local athlete, 49 year old Charl Parkin, was diagnosed 10 years ago with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND) , the same condition that was suffered by Joost vd Westhuisen. With a diagnosis of only 2 to 3 years to live, Charl decided to take matters into his own hands and prove the doctors wrong. Charl borrowed a street bike from a friend to train and entered the ITU world triathlon series in Rottendam on a PTS3 para triathlon classification as a novice.
Charl not only competed, he also took the gold and beat the current Africa champion who is half his age.
Charl was short listed for the London Olympic swimming team but was not chosen due to his age, but says his new goal is to compete in the 2020 Olympics!
Well done Charl!
