SA Lifesaving Coup for Nelson Mandela Bay
In a major coup for Nelson Mandela Bay, Lifesaving SA has announced that a consolidated Lifesaving SA National Champs will be held in Port Elizabeth for the first time – in April 2018 – making its permanent home in the Friendly City.
It has been decided to bring the whole Nipper, Senior, Junior, Masters and Stillwater champs to Port Elizabeth in April 2018 which will take place from 31 March to 8 April next year.
Lifesaving SA President Dylan Tommy told Sport Elizabeth they’ve signed a three year contract to host the consolidated Lifesaving National Champs in Port Elizabeth. “Our new national sponsor General Tire is based in Port Elizabeth and the city is also very central for other clubs,” said Tommy.
“Kings Beach has also hosted very successful National Lifesaving Championships before so they really have a very good track record. We will host all the surf lifesaving at King’s Beach and the Stillwater champs will take place at the Newton Park indoor swimming centre.”
Tommy said that 4500 lifesavers and their supporters would certainly be a windfall for any city. “Port Elizabeth is really going to be buzzing in the first week of April next year. It’s the week before Ironman so Nelson Mandela Bay is really going to be bursting at the seams.
Your Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has attended our events in the past which was really important to us, and his support was a motivating factor for us to come back here. We also felt it made sense to consolidate the Championships as a lot of families have their children competing across the age groups.
Many parents also compete in the senior events so to have a family competing together at one consolidated event and venue means a lot of cost-saving for them, and hopefully a real economic boost for Nelson Mandela Bay.”
Meanwhile: Lifesaving South Africa has been nominated, for the first time, as one of three federations for National Federation of the Year by Sport and Recreation South Africa. Lifesaving SA will come up against Netball SA and Surfing SA. In an official announcement made by the Minister of Sport and Recreation Thulas Nxesi in late October, Lifesaving South Africa and President of Lifesaving South Africa, Dylan Tommy were among the nominees for the 2017 SA Sports Awards.
Tommy has also been nominated for Administrator of the Year, along with Michael Makhubela (Volleyball SA) and Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo (Cricket).
“It is such an honour to be nominated for the SA Sports Awards Federation of the Year and is a reward for the hard work put in by the organisation and its sportsmen and women,” said Tommy. “Lifesaving plays a very important role in South African communities and is the only sport that is focused around saving lives.
We are inspired by our lifeguards and sportsmen and women who continue to push themselves in the sport and who give of their time voluntarily to keep our beaches, pools and public swimming areas safe. With investment from our new national sponsor General Tire, we have been able to elevate the sport of lifesaving in our country, allowing LSA to proudly stand on the podium with Netball SA and Surfing SA.”
The awards will take place on Sunday 12th November, 2017 at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg.
